Psalms of Ascents, Part I

Luke Harriman began a series of messages reviewing the 15 psalms that bear the title, "A Song of Ascents." After discussing a pattern that emerges in these psalms—in which the psalmist moves from distress, through dependence, to delight—Brother Luke traces this pattern through Psalms 120, 121, and 122.

During his week-long visit to South Florida, Brother Carlton Jones brought a stirring message at our Thursday night meeting, encouraging us to echo the words of Saul of Tarsus to the resurrected Jesus of Nazareth: "Lord, what do you want me to do?" Considering the examples of several spiritual seekers in Scripture, Brother Carlton challenges us to not merely be hearers of the Word, but doers also.

Whom Shall We Fear?

Brother Collin Beckford encouraged us from the story of Joshua and Psalm 27 to realize the courage we should have in the Lord. We can truly say, "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" (Ps 27:1). After this, Brother Luke Harriman spoke briefly from the story of Deborah about the role mothers have in literally en-couraging their children to trust in God and not be afraid.

Learning About Affliction in Psalm 119

Brother Ken Huebner took us to seven places in Psalm 119 where the psalmist mentions affliction or being afflicted. In each one, we find encouragement to turn to God's Word in the midst of our struggles, and Brother Ken reminded us of the many reasons the people of God might face affliction -- even when we aren't committing some grievous sin.

Learning about Worship from Passover

Luke Harriman returned to the topic from a few weeks ago, considering what we learn from various celebrations of Passover about our worship in the breaking of the bread. Where the focus in the previous message was Hezekiah's Passover celebration, here Brother Luke looks at three more instances. We see in the Passover feasts of Josiah, the returned exiles in Ezra, and the Jewish leaders of Jesus's day how our worship can serve as an opportunity for consecration, celebration, and circumspection.

Wisdom on the Way to Heaven

Brothers Collin Beckford and Ken Huebner shared the pulpit last Sunday with Brother Collin offering a modern-day parable of salvation in the picture of a bus to heaven driven by the Lord Himself. Brother Ken followed up with encouragement from Proverbs 24 to seek the wisdom of God as we walk the pilgrim journey of life.

Overcoming Barriers to True Worship

Luke Harriman gave a message on worship following the youth retreat in Leesburg last weekend. If we all know in our heart that worship is the highest calling in our lives, what are some of the barriers that might cause us to not fully enter into worship of the Father "in spirit and truth"? Brother Luke examines some such barriers in the account of Hezekiah's celebration of the Passover.

Life in the Center of God's Will

Brother Richard Ledgister looks at the lives of two men and considers the difference of being inside God's will for our lives and outside his will. He first looks at the prodigal son as an example of someone outside God's will and then turns to the example of Peter, following the command to cast out his net once more. While we can't necessarily look at our circumstances to determine whether we are walking according to God's will, we can find confirmation as we pray, read His Word, and walk in obedience to the truth we know.
